Teder

Assignment 3: Movement & Water

This week we got the assignment at the Pure Photo Workshop to photograph movement and water. Although I had some trouble with my camera and I couldn’t find the thing you screw on your camera to use the tripod and the weather was gloomy again, I had much photo fun this week.

I took photos on 3 days this week, but the photos are randomly put down here.
On the first day I made photos of the glass with water. It was good to practice with manual focussing and it was fun to throw in the amethyst stones and see what the effect was on the photo. Timing was not easy at all (I can use some more practice on that hihi). I used an external flash to get enough light, but using that flash brings unhandy things like limited SS (not faster than 1/250). I like the middle photo with the stones the best I think because of the calm look and the wave in the water.
The second day my daughter rode her unicycle while I made some photos. That day I didn’t have the screw thing for the camera to use the tripod and my camera was not autofocussing on the lens I wanted to use. I don’t know why, but it looks like it is fixed now. I’m not really happy with the outcome, but you can see the difference between the SS very good.
The last day we went to a small lake. I tried different SS and hoped to capture the mood around water. I made a short video there too. We all enjoyed the visit although it was quite cold. I think I like the hair photo and the jump photo for the movement assignment best and I like the one where my daughter walks slowly in the water for the water assignment best.

SS 2000
SS between 1250 and 5 (not using the tripod)
SS 2000 and 25

SS 4000

because I was using an external flash I could not use a faster ss than 250

My Style:

It was wonderful to experiment with different SS, especially the very fast SS I will use more now and I like to experiment with slow SS too, but for me it is still very hard (if not impossible) to get a nice looking photo with slow SS.

For the water assignment I wanted to try more settings, but I didn’t have enough time. I like to take some rain shots too someday. Since it is raining all the time here I will get enough opportunities :).

Have a lovely weekend!

Assignment 2: Positioning, Light and Point of View

For the Pure Photo Workshop we got the assignment to think about positioning, light and point of view. I learned a lot from this assignment and I think that it will help me take better and more creative photos in the future.

On May 12th I made a series of photos of colorful beads. The orange was inspired by Yvonne.
light from the front and the back
light from the sides
above and below (light from the side)
angles (light from the side)
angles (light from the side)
far (sharp on beads and sharp on cloth/light from the side)
close (light from the side)
blur and sharp (just for fun/I used a different aperture (16) on the sharp one/light from the back)
collage just for fun.

It was great to see what the effect was on the photo when the light came from different sides. I love to take photos with light in front of me because of the nice glow, but you can see that the colors are a lot less. And although photos with light from one side have a shadow I like them the best of the light photos. I like the below photo the least and the diagonals are not my favourite either but both are probably so because of the subject. The close up is my favourite. I added some blur, sharp and sharp not on the subject photos because I experimented a little on that too. I like blur.

On May 17th I made the following photos to experiment a bit more on light, angle and close/far, but then outside with children. The weather was very cloudy, but I think my son brings a little sunshine into the photos. The black and white one was inspired by Daan.

light in front, angle from below (the white looks a bit artificial but is the clouded sky)
from above
between above and eye level

The photo that fits my style best is this one I think, a bit more soft than the one above. Thanks Gail for the tips.

Thanks Mariska for this great assignment. I drop by all the other participants soon.

Assignment 1: Create your own style

For the Pure Photo Workshop we got the assignment to create our own style. I had so much fun and was so inspired by this first assignment.

Introduction:
My name is Jane (36 y), together with my sweetheart and three lovely kids we live on a small farm in The Netherlands.
I started taking photography a little bit more serious 3 or 4 years ago using my first DSLR a Nikon D60. And although time for photography is a big issue here, I still love making photos.
Now I use a Nikon D7000 and both a Nikor micro 60mm 2.8 lens and a Nikor 18-105mm 3.5-5.6 lens.

Assignment:
On Pinterest I made a My Style board to find out what my style is. It was funny to see that my style is not completely the same as my photos usually are. The lightness is the same in my photos and My Style board, but the colors on My Style board are more soft, calm and balanced. The photos I usually make are more focussed on sharp and contrast while My Style is more soft and even. Pinterest inspires me always but now more then ever in the area of photography, what beautiful photos I found there.

Click here to go to my My Style pinterest board.

If I had to pick one photo that wasn’t made by me but really gave me the feeling ‘this is me’ then I think I pick this one.

A photo that I made myself a while ago fits the My Style board too I think.

July 2010

On May 5th my daughter and I went to a park very close to where we live and found a field full of cuckoo flowers (pinksterbloemen) there. I made some photos and had the feeling this one would fit my My Style board best. I think this photo fits because of the light and the peacefulness in the photo.

Looking forward visiting al the participants blogs.
Thanks Britt for this lovely assignment.
